Sudbury letter: Casino revenue 'fictional'

Article content

I'm hearing all the arguments about the casino being a great financial benefit to the city. It's difficult to argue that $5 million per year to the city generated from a casino is not good for city coffers.

For every positive there is a negative; the negative that I see is the addiction side of the coin. No one seems to mention that.

Addictions, whether it be fentanyl, crack etc., is extremely costly to every citizen. Gambling is also a very serious addiction that will have to be addressed once a casino is made available to those that will now be within walking distance of the facility.

I totally disagree with Coun. Robert Kirwan and, as usual, he has his blinders on. There is an article that describes the revenue of $5 million comes from people spending $160 million for the city to receive the $5 million. As said, that $160 million that citizens will have to spend is not for business and does not stay in the community.

It's a done deal with the location of the casino and it's all about fictional revenue for the city. Think about it.
