Sudbury letter: Most support a casino

Re: "Accent: A voice against Sudbury's casino," Jan. 13

Where are you people coming from? The results of the Oracle Poll taken last year showed most Sudburians support a new casino. City council is listening to the majority, who demand a new casino and entertainment centre. Next year's council will have no alternative but to continue with this project.

They say that empty cans make more noise. Obviously, the two per cent of Sudburians who are against the casino and entertainment centre seem to be getting all the publicity. Why are these people so pessimistic about the future?

They opposed the new casino, the downtown library, the new art gallery and the convention centre. If we listened to the pessimists, Maley Drive would never be built, neither would the Big Nickel or the Brady Street bypasses.

It appears these cynical citizens are opposed to progress. If they don't like the idea of Sudbury moving into the 21st century, maybe they should live elsewhere.

They mention the millions of dollars leaving the community from the casino. What about the millions that leave the Sudbury area, weekly, from Walmart and Costco, Home Depot, Lowe's and other American establishments? At least the casino dollars go to our provincial government and returns to our municipality to pay for our roads and infrastructure. The money stays in Ontario, for the people of Ontario.

Tom Fortin, you state that $764 million was lost by the patrons of the slots over the past 18 years. They weren't lost. We don't expect to win any money when we go to the slots. We go there for pleasure and leisure. If we win a few dollars, that's fine. If we don't win, we leave knowing that we had an enjoyable time with our friends.

Our forefathers worked hard to build this community into a great place to live. They had a vision to build Sudbury from a lumber camp and mining town in the 19th century to the great northern city it is today--a city that is now the capital of the North.

Wake up, Sudbury - this is progress. Sudbury, like any community that thrives, has growing pains and the way I see it, the only pains we have are those people who are against any advancement for the future.

Let's be optimistic, Remember, today is the tomorrow we were promised yesterday.
