They were seen assisting the foreigners flee, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com on Thursday. The action came after video footage from a CCTV camera installed in a nearby building became viral.

One of the policemen was identified as Constable Dipanker Chakma from Ramna Police Station and the other as ASI Golan Hossain Mithu of DMP.

Police decided to suspend them after they were identified from the video footage.

Casinos illegally operated by some Jubo League leaders inside in Young Men’s Club and Wanderers Club in Fakirapool, and Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra in Gulistan were discovered by the law- enforcing agencies in drives on Sep 18. There were a number of foreign attendants.

On that night, the security camera footage of Sumit Hasan Lodge in the capital's Segunbagicha showed that some plainclothesmen entered the building where the Nepalese lived.

Some media reported that one of the plainclothesmen carried a walkie-talkie, which was denied by Monirul Islam, chief of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit.

"So far, there is no evidence that they were the policemen," he told a news conference on Tuesday.

Two days later, the DMP commissioner confirmed the identities of the two policemen and said, "After watching the video footage, the behaviours of the two policemen looked suspicious."

Dipankar Chakma was expected to join the office on Sep 3 after going on leave on Aug 28. However, the authorities field a general diary at the Ramna Police Station on Sep 17 after Chakma failed to join the office after the end of his leave.

During the raid on Sep 18, RAB also found some Nepalese and Chinese citizens in the illegal casinos. However, they were let go.

“We are investigating whether they (foreigners) have work permits. If not, (if) illegal, action will be taken as per the law,” RAB Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam had told reporters.

The illegal casinos had allegedly been operating under the very nose of the law-enforcing agencies—an allegation denied by the police officers earlier.

"Apart from the two policemen, we’re investigating whether any other policeman is involved in the casino. Departmental action will be taken once the charges are proved,” said the DMP commissioner.
