Queensland man accused of 0.31-second sex assault

A Queensland man faces trial accused of reaching out and touching a woman on the vagina, for 0.31 of a second, as he walked past her in a casino.

Nathan Sologinkin pleaded not guilty in the Brisbane District Court on Monday to one count of sexual assault, which allegedly happened just after midnight on July 13, 2017.

Crown prosecutor Stephanie Gallagher told the jury the case against Sologinkin was "very simple".

"Less than 0.31 of a second, that's how quickly it can take to sexually assault someone ... that's all it took," Ms Gallagher said.

She said it was alleged Sologinkin walked past the woman on the night of the third State of Origin rugby league match in 2017 and in one motion touched her from vagina to hip and continued walking on.

"He never looked back," Ms Gallagher said.

She said the woman reported the alleged assault to staff at the Treasury Casino in Brisbane, who then used CCTV footage and tracked down Sologinkin.

When police arrested him about 2am, defence barrister Craig Eberhardt said Sologinkin's first response was to say: "That's bullshit".

Mr Eberhardt said when his client passed the woman in a crowded area he did not look at her.

"Remember this, a witness who is mistaken but otherwise honest can tell in a very compelling way his or her mistaken recollection of what happened but it doesn't mean it is proof," Mr Eberhardt told the jury.

He also told them to "avoid the trap" of confirmation bias when viewing CCTV footage of the alleged assault.
