Man shot in the hand several times near southeast Atlanta apartment complex

Atlanta Police Department officers roped off part of the area with crime scene tape.

ATLANTA — Police are investigating a shooting near a southeast apartment complex Saturday evening.

Officers were called to an area along Stovall Street southeast near Glenwood Park Lofts. The neighborhood sits near Interstate 20 and Ralph David Abernathy Freeway, less than two miles from Zoo Atlanta.

11Alive photojournalist Cody Dallas is at the scene where at least three police vehicles are parked. Investigators also roped off part of the roadway with crime scene tape, blocking off entry for a portion of the street.

Laquita Belt said she called 911 several times. She said she was outside when she saw an armed man pointing a large firearm in her direction, where a person was running.

"But I'm in the crossfire," she said. Belt added that she was in her vehicle and quickly stepped on the gas, rushing to get away from the area.

Atlanta police said they arrived around 7:18 p.m. and learned a man's hand was shot several times. Someone took him to the hospital where police found him and questioned him about the shooting, according to officers. Police said early evidence shows the shooting stemmed from an argument.

Belt said the area has seen several car break-ins before but described this incident as the worst situation the neighborhood has seen.

"I almost just lost my life," she said. "Something has got to be done about this."

Police said they are still investigating.
