9:30 a.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market is open 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. every Friday inside The Town Centre, with local products including baking, canning, jewelry, crafts and more.

4 p.m. — The Neepawa and District Chamber of Commerce kicks off the fifth annual Chamber Fair at the Neepawa Fairgrounds with a midway and food trucks open at 4 p.m.

7 p.m. — Habitat for Humanity, Killarney Chapter presents The Janzen Boys at the Killarney Legion. A fun evening of music featuring the father-son trio with excerpts from their play “Blink’s Garden.” Coffee and dessert available for purchase. Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for children ages six and up and are available at the door.

7:30 p.m. — Forever Young Club of Brandon’s Old Time R&R Spring Sock Hop with classic ’50s, ’60s and ’70s rock ’n’ roll, will take place at the Park Avenue Activity Centre. 9 a.m. — The City of Brandon’s Environmental Initiatives Section and the Brandon Environment Committee join with various community partners for the fourth annual Eco Day in May event at the Downtown Global Market (12th Street and Rosser Avenue) until 2 p.m. This is the first Global Market of the season with lots of activities including a $5 fair trade pancake breakfast, kick off for 2018 Incredible Edible Brandon, learning from environmental stewarts, bouncy castles, performance by Mecca Productions and learning how to make BEE houses.

9 a.m. — Brandon’s second annual Touch-A-Truck fundraising event returns to the Keystone Centre with a wide variety of trucks, cars and equipment on display for children to interact with in a safe, monitored area. The event is being hosted as a fundraiser for the two Kokum’s Early Education Enrichment daycares in Brandon. Tickets on-site during the event which runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost is $5 per person. Quiet hour from 9 a.m.-10 a.m., free of horns and sirens for anyone with noise sensitivities. There will also be a 50/50 draw, bouncy houses, barbecue, food trucks, face painting and more. 11 a.m. — May Madness Spring craft and trade show takes place at the Tundra Oil and Gas Place in Virden until 4 p.m. Free admission. Over 40 vendors. Strays That Can’t Pay will have a canteen open.

1 p.m. — Assiniboine Community College will host its first Student Success Celebration and Powwow Demonstration at the ACC gymnasium. The college will recognize and celebrate all Assiniboine students and graduates — not just those who graduate in 2018 — on the successes they have achieved this year. Indigenous drummers and dancers will provide demonstrations. Crafters and vendors also onsite.

1:30 p.m.; 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. — Returning for the second time to Canada, the world renowned Super Circus Spectacular, created by the famed circus producer Cindy Migley, in conjunction with the Sarasota Producing Co. takes place at Credit Union Place Arena in Dauphin. Features Motorcycle Titans in the Globe of Death, Cossack Trick Riders on galloping horses, dogs and ponies, a giant clydesdale and mini me as well as clowns, acrobats and more. 2 p.m. — Hamiota Midwest annual Art Show and Tea will be held at the Heritage Art Building until 4 p.m.

5 p.m. — Brandon Prairie Pride Lions Club, Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School and the Brandon Chefs Association present the sixth annual YMCA Spring Run pre-race pasta dinner at Prairie Oasis Senior Centre from 5-7 p.m. Runners, their families, friends and the public are invited to “carb load” the night before the big race. Adults $10; children under 12 years $5. Tickets can be purchased with Spring Run registration at the YMCA or separately from the Brandon Prairie Pride Lions Club by contacting Louise at louisehersak@gmail.com or Jim at forsythe@brandonu.ca. 6 p.m. — The Treesblood Spring Festival takes place at the Treesblood Farm at 1735 Rosser Ave. This is a music, premaculture, and arts celebration held annually and is the Assiniboine Food Forest Initiative’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Features local musical talent under the big tent after 6 p.m. Come earlier to experience the ancient oak woods, family camping, nature trails and workshops.

8 p.m. — Club 77 Singles May dance with a western theme takes place at the Shriners Hall with music by Len Gadica’s One Man Band. Lunch at 10 p.m. Singles, couples welcome. Admission $12 for members and associates; $15 for members.

9 p.m. — Party in the Dirt fundraiser take place in the Agricultural Society Barn in Minnedosa. Tickets $10. No minors. Music, bar, silent auction and late lunch will be served.

Sunday, May 27

1 p.m. — The first PASCAR race day of the racing season, the Arthur Verhaeghe Memorial Race Day, takes place at the Souris Race Park (two miles east of Souris and less than a mile to the north). This is four-cylinder stock car racing. Free admission, silver collection.

2 p.m. — A concert will be held at the Hamiota United Church with music by Catherine and Ron Anfinson. Admission is by donation. All proceeds to Mission and Service.

4 p.m. — The Neepawa Knox Presbyterian Spring Dinner will be held at the church with a cold plate from 4-6 p.m. Adults $13; children 5-12 years $6.

4:30 p.m. — Minnedosa’s Pickerel Fish Fry will be held at St. Mark’s Anglican Church until 6:30 p.m. Cost is $15 per person.

The 40 — The 40 is supporting local bands for the month of May. Friday features the Jakeleg Blues Band. On Saturday it is the 8 Track Shuffle.

City Centre Hotel — Prairie Dawg Entertainment and the City Centre host Brandon’s first Hip Hop Showcase. This will be a showcase of all local Westman hip hop artists showing off their talents for the first time! Admission is $3. Doors open at 9 p.m. Ages 18+.

At the museums and galleries

The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m., seven days a week at the Brandon Municipal Airport. Visitors are invited to travel back in time to the 1940s while touring a Second World War vintage hangar serving as a display area for aircraft, vehicles and hundreds of artifacts from that era. Manitoban RCAF who lost their lives during the war are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Second World War memorial wall. For more information, call 204-727-2444.

The Arts West Travelling Gallery — The travelling gallery is at the Hartney Library until Saturday. It then moves to the Deloraine Library.

Wasagaming Community Arts — The opening of the Wasagaming Community Arts takes place Friday from 7-9 p.m. RAMP, Kathleen Lagasse and Samyra Stuart-Altman exhibition runs until June 12. For information, call 204-848-2993.

The RCA Museum (Royal Canadian Artillery Museum) — An award-winning national museum that has five major galleries and more than 30 vehicles and guns located outside in the Gun Park. Located at CFB Shilo, we are proud to present “1918 — The Last 100 Days.” This temporary exhibit traces the Canadian experience at the end of the First World War in France and Belgium. Some of the hardest fought battles and highest casualty rates came at the end of the war — 100 years ago. This exhibit runs until Dec. 14. Wheelchair accessible. The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba — In the Main Gallery: “Theatre from the Jungle” by Richard Ibghey and Marilou Lemmens. A collaborative experiment in theatre and installation that emerges from the landscape of immigration and labour in Brandon on display until June 9. Community Gallery: The AGSM has partnered with Sunrise Credit Union and Keywest Photo to bring you the “Our Manitoba Photo Contest.” Winning entries on display until June 2. June 2 —Playing at the Evans Theatre is “In The Archives,” a documentary series by Brandon filmmaker and archivist Tom Mitchell at 2 p.m. It features five short documentaries centered on the power of archival materials — photographs, text and oral history — to evoke historical memory and a sense of place and time.
